Why Visit the Turquoise Coast?
Turkey's Mediterranean coastline — often called the Turquoise Coast (Turkuaz Kıyısı) — is one of Europe's most beautiful stretches of shoreline. The water really is that impossibly blue. Combined with 3,000+ years of ruins (Lycian, Greek, Roman), pine-forested mountains dropping into the sea, and excellent food, it's a region that rewards both beach lovers and history buffs.
Antalya city serves as the main gateway, with its well-preserved old town (Kaleiçi), Roman-era harbor, and international airport. From there, you can explore westward along the coast to Kaş, Kalkan, and Olympos, or eastward to Side and Alanya.
Best Time to Visit
| Season | Weather | Sea Temp | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| May–Jun | Warm (25–30°C), not too hot | 20–24°C | Beach + sightseeing, pre-peak prices |
| Jul–Aug | Hot (33–40°C) | 26–28°C | Pure beach/resort holiday, very busy |
| Sep–Oct | Warm (25–32°C), less crowded | 24–27°C | Best balance of weather and crowds |
| Nov–Apr | Mild to cool, some rain | 16–20°C | Off-season deals, hiking (Lycian Way), fewer tourists |
Top Experiences
- Kaleiçi (Old Town Antalya) — Roman-era harbor surrounded by Ottoman houses, narrow streets, restaurants, and boutique hotels. See our Kaleiçi guide.

Getting There & Around
Airport: Antalya Airport (AYT) is Turkey's biggest resort airport with domestic and international flights. Direct flights from Istanbul take about 1 hour.
Getting around the coast:
- Rental car — Best option for flexibility. Coast road is scenic and well-maintained. See our getting around the coast guide.
- Intercity buses — Regular service connects Antalya → Side → Alanya (east) and Antalya → Kaş → Fethiye (west).
- Dolmuş (minibuses) — Local routes between nearby towns. Cheap and frequent in summer.
- Organized tours — Day trips from Antalya to Perge, Aspendos, Termessos, or the waterfalls are widely available.

Common Mistakes
- Only staying at an all-inclusive resort — The coast has incredible independent restaurants, villages, and experiences. Get out and explore.
- Underestimating distances — Antalya to Kaş is 3+ hours by car. Plan driving time realistically.
- Skipping Termessos — It's less famous than Perge/Aspendos but far more dramatic — a mountain-top ancient city in a national park. Bring good shoes.
- Not renting a car — Public transport exists but a car unlocks hidden beaches, ruins, and viewpoints along the coast road.
