Kayseri (ASR) — More Flights, Better Prices
Kayseri is the main airport with significantly more flights — Turkish Airlines, Pegasus, and AnadoluJet all fly here from Istanbul multiple times daily. Flights are also available from Izmir and Antalya.
- Typical fare: $30–$80 one way (book 2–4 weeks ahead for best prices)
- Airport to Göreme: Pre-booked shuttle ($4–$7 arranged by hotel or tour company), private transfer ($30–$50), or rental car
Nevşehir (NAV) — Closer but Fewer Options
Nevşehir is closer to Göreme (30 minutes vs 1 hour) but has far fewer flights — typically 1–2 daily from Istanbul.
- Typical fare: Similar to Kayseri
- Better for: Travelers who value shorter ground transfer time
Recommendation: Fly into Kayseri for the best flight selection and prices. The extra 30 minutes of drive time is rarely a deciding factor.
By Bus (Budget Option)
Overnight buses connect Istanbul to Cappadocia in 10–12 hours. Major companies include Metro Turizm, Süha Turizm, and Nevşehir Seyahat.
- Cost: $10–$15 one way
- Departure: Evening (typically 20:00–22:00) from Istanbul Esenler or Alibeyköy bus stations
- Arrival: Morning in Nevşehir bus terminal, then local bus/dolmuş to Göreme
Pros: Very cheap, overnight so you save a night's accommodation Cons: Long, uncomfortable (even with reclining seats), arrives early morning
