Haggling in Turkish Bazaars: How to Negotiate Like a Local

Haggling is expected at bazaars, markets, and for some services (taxis, tours). Start at 40–50% of the asking price and work toward 60–75%. Be friendly, walk away if the price isn't right, and never feel pressured.

Best for most travelers: Start at half the asking price, work up gradually, and be willing to walk away. The 'walking away' move is the most effective negotiation tool.

The Haggling Process

Step 1: Browse Without Commitment

Look at items without showing too much enthusiasm. If you pick something up excitedly, the price goes up. Be casual.

Step 2: Ask the Price

"Bu ne kadar?" (How much is this?) or just "Price?" The shopkeeper will tell you the first price — this is the starting point, not the real price.

Step 3: Counter-Offer

Start at 40–50% of the first price. This isn't rude — it's expected. The seller will act shocked; this is performance.

Step 4: Negotiate

Go back and forth 2–3 times. Each time, move your offer up slightly. The seller moves down slightly. You're typically aiming for 60–75% of the original asking price.

Step 5: The Walk-Away

If you can't agree, politely say "Too expensive, thank you" and start walking away. If the price is negotiable, the seller will call you back with a better offer. If they don't, the price was already fair.

Step 6: Agree and Pay

When you agree, shake hands, pay, and take your item. Once you name a price and it's accepted, you're expected to buy.

Tips for Better Haggling

  1. Compare prices — Walk through the entire bazaar before buying. Get a sense of price ranges.
  2. Buy multiple items — Bundling gets better discounts. "I'll take three if you do a good price."
  3. Cash is king — Offering cash often gets a better price than card (shops pay card fees).
  4. Be friendly — Haggling is a social interaction, not a fight. Smile, be respectful, enjoy the tea.
  5. Know what you want to pay — Decide your maximum before starting. Don't get swept up.
  6. Morning shoppers — Some sellers believe the first sale of the day is lucky. Morning may yield better prices.
