Selçuk — The History Lover's Base
Selçuk is a small Aegean town sitting right next to Ephesus. It has its own set of impressive sights, a walkable center, good restaurants, and a relaxed, authentic Turkish atmosphere.
Pros:
- Walking distance to Ephesus (30–40 min walk or 5 min taxi)
- The Ephesus Archaeological Museum is in town
- Temple of Artemis (one of the Seven Wonders) is a short walk
- Basilica of St. John and Ayasuluk fortress on the hilltop
- Genuinely charming — not a resort town
- Cheaper than Kuşadası
- Easy day trip to Şirince village (8 km)
Cons:
- No beaches
- Limited nightlife
- Fewer hotel options (but quality is good)
- Small town — can feel quiet in the evening
Best for: Solo travelers, couples, history enthusiasts, budget travelers, and anyone making Ephesus the main focus.
Kuşadası — The Beach Resort Option
Kuşadası is a popular coastal resort town and cruise port. It's more developed, touristy, and beach-oriented — a different experience from Selçuk's quiet charm.
Pros:
- Beaches (Ladies Beach, town beach, Pigeon Island area)
- More hotel options including all-inclusive resorts
- Active nightlife and bar scene
- Cruise port (convenient if arriving by ship)
- More shopping options
- Dilek Peninsula National Park nearby (excellent beaches and hiking)
Cons:
- 20–30 minutes from Ephesus (transport cost adds up)
- More touristy and commercial
- Restaurant quality is inconsistent — tourist-trap risk
- Can feel generic compared to Selçuk's character
- Higher prices for food and accommodation
Best for: Beach lovers, families wanting resort amenities, cruise passengers, and travelers who want nightlife.
Getting Between Selçuk & Kuşadası
- Dolmuş: Every 20–30 minutes, $0.50–$0.75 20–25 minutes
- Taxi: $3–$4 15–20 minutes
- You can easily stay in one and visit the other for a day
Our Recommendation
For most travelers: Stay in Selçuk. It's closer to Ephesus, more charming, cheaper, and has its own excellent sights (museum, Temple of Artemis, Basilica of St. John). You won't miss a beach for 1–2 nights.
Exception: If your trip combines Ephesus with several beach days on the Aegean coast, Kuşadası makes sense. Also the natural choice for cruise ship passengers needing one night on land.
