Ölüdeniz is Turkey's most photographed beach — a sheltered Blue Lagoon with impossibly clear turquoise water. Entry fee applies for the lagoon area. It's crowded in summer but deserves the hype. Combine with paragliding.

Best for most travelers: Arrive early morning for the calmest water and fewest crowds. The Blue Lagoon is the main attraction; the public beach nearby is free.

What Makes Ölüdeniz Special?

Ölüdeniz (meaning "Dead Sea" in Turkish, referring to the calm water) is a sheltered bay where a sandy beach meets a turquoise lagoon, backed by forested mountains. It's a protected national park, which has limited development and kept the water pristine.

The Blue Lagoon is the sheltered inner section — a shallow, warm pool of incredible color that looks almost artificial. It's consistently voted one of the world's best beaches.

The Free Beach

The public beach strip (Belcekız Beach) runs parallel to the lagoon and is free to access. It's a pebble-sand mix with plenty of restaurants and hotels behind it. This is where paragliders land — watching them float down from Babadağ is entertainment in itself.

What to Do

  1. Swim in the Blue Lagoon — The main event. The shallow, warm, sheltered water is perfect for floating and swimming.
  2. Watch paragliders — Tandem paragliders from Babadağ mountain land on the beach throughout the day. Book your own flight — see our paragliding guide.
  3. Kayak or paddleboard — Rental available on the beach
  4. Hike to the viewpoint — The Lycian Way passes above Ölüdeniz with incredible aerial views
  5. Boat trip — Day trips to Butterfly Valley and nearby coves depart from the beach

Tips

  • Arrive by 09:00 for the best spot and calmest water
  • Bring water shoes — Parts of the beach are pebbly
  • Sunscreen is essential — The reflected light intensifies UV
  • Don't skip the lagoon — The paid area is noticeably better than the free beach for swimming
  • Stay nearby — Ölüdeniz has hotels and pensions; alternatively, Fethiye is 15 km away with more options
