Buy an eSIM from Airalo or Holafly before your trip. Install it on your phone via QR code or app. Activate cellular data when you land. Takes 5 minutes — no SIM card swap needed.

Best for most travelers: Set up before departure. Test the eSIM at home (just don't enable data roaming yet). Activate it when you land in Turkey.

Step 1: Check eSIM Compatibility

Your phone must support eSIM. Most phones from 2019 onward do:

iPhone: XS, XR, and all newer models Samsung: S20 and newer, Z Fold/Flip series Google Pixel: 3a and newer

To check: Go to Settings → Cellular/Mobile → look for "Add eSIM" or "Add Cellular Plan." If the option exists, your phone supports eSIM.

Important: Your phone must be unlocked (not carrier-locked).

Step 2: Choose a Provider

HolaflyLocal carriersUnlimited data, $6–$8/dayApp or QR code

Step 3: Purchase & Install

Via App (Easiest)

  1. Download the provider's app (Airalo, Holafly, etc.)
  2. Create an account
  3. Select "Turkey" and choose your data plan
  4. Purchase — you'll receive an eSIM profile
  5. Follow the in-app installation prompts
  6. The eSIM will appear in your phone's cellular settings

Via QR Code

  1. Purchase the eSIM on the provider's website
  2. You'll receive a QR code via email
  3. Go to Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Scan QR Code
  4. Scan the QR code
  5. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete setup

Step 4: Configure Settings

After installation:

  1. Label your eSIM — Name it "Turkey" or "Travel" so you know which line is which
  2. Set your default line — Keep your home number as primary for calls/texts
  3. Set the eSIM as your data line — So all mobile data uses the Turkey eSIM
  4. Enable Data Roaming on the eSIM line (required for some providers)
  5. Turn off data roaming on your home line — Avoid surprise charges

Step 5: Activate in Turkey

When you land:

  1. Turn off airplane mode
  2. The eSIM should connect automatically to a Turkish network
  3. Verify connectivity by opening a web page
  4. If it doesn't connect, toggle the eSIM off and on in cellular settings
