Istanbul Airport (IST) — Transfer Options
Istanbul Airport (IST) opened in 2019 on the European side, about 40 km northwest of the city center. It replaced Atatürk Airport and is now the main international hub.
Havaist Bus (Best Value)
Havaist operates direct shuttle buses from IST to several city locations including Taksim, Sultanahmet, Kadıköy, and Yenikapı. Buses run frequently (every 30–60 minutes, depending on route and time of day).
| Route | Typical Fare | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| IST → Taksim | $3–$4 | 60–90 min |
| IST → Sultanahmet | $3–$4 | 70–100 min |
| IST → Kadıköy (Asian side) | $3–$4 | 90–120 min |
Tip: Pay with contactless card or Istanbulkart. Buses depart from the ground floor of the arrivals terminal. Follow signs for "Havaist."
Metro (M11 Line — Cheapest)
The M11 metro line connects Istanbul Airport to Kağıthane station, where you can transfer to the M7 line toward central locations. From there, additional transfers to the T1 tram (for Sultanahmet) or the M2 metro (for Taksim) are needed.
- Cost: $0.25–$0.75 with Istanbulkart (multiple taps for transfers)
- Duration: 70–100 minutes total depending on destination and transfers
- Downside: Requires 2–3 transfers with luggage, which can be tiring after a long flight
Taxi
Taxis are plentiful at IST. Use the official taxi rank outside arrivals — avoid anyone approaching you inside the terminal.
- Cost: $8–$15+ depending on traffic and destination
- Duration: 40–70 minutes depending on traffic
- Tip: Insist the meter runs. Use the BiTaksi app for fare estimates and to avoid scams. See our common scams guide for taxi tips.
Private Transfer
Pre-booked transfers are the most convenient option, especially for families or groups. A driver meets you at arrivals with a sign.
- Cost: $30–$50 for a sedan, $50–$80 for a minivan (typically pre-paid online)
- Duration: 40–70 minutes
- Best for: Arriving late at night, traveling with children, or groups of 3+
Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) — Transfer Options
Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is on the Asian side, about 50 km southeast of the European center. It's mainly used by budget airlines (Pegasus, AnadoluJet).
| Option | Typical Cost | Duration to Taksim |
|---|---|---|
| Havabus shuttle | $3–$4 | 90–120 min |
| Taxi | $10–$15+ | 60–90 min |
| Private transfer | $40–$60 | 60–90 min |
Bus + ferry combo: Some travelers take a Havabus to Kadıköy, then a ferry across to Eminönü on the European side. It's scenic and avoids bridge traffic, but adds time and luggage handling.
Which Airport Should You Fly Into?
If you have a choice, IST is almost always more convenient for reaching central Istanbul. SAW is worthwhile if the price difference is significant (common with Pegasus Airlines).
Tips for Both Airports
- Get an Istanbulkart at the airport — available from kiosks at metro/bus stops. You'll need it for all public transport.
- Avoid unofficial taxis — Use only the official taxi ranks or pre-booked services.
- Late-night arrivals — Havaist and metro reduce frequency after midnight. Book a private transfer if arriving very late.
- SIM cards — Both airports have Turkcell/Vodafone/Türk Telekom shops in arrivals. Expect to pay $20–$40 for a tourist SIM.
